Monuments to Caretaking & Giving

DEADLINE MARCH 1

Open call for stories, poetry, and creative writing of any kind around experiences of caregiving and caretaking. A selection will be collated into a book for print and in person reading event in late April.

More Details:
Artist and activist Molly Gochan writes: caregiving is ‘a role and action that lacks a tangible shape but carries an impact that resonates universally.’ Our words do their best to stretch and capture what these experiences mean to us, how they feel to us, and how they form us into who we are.

The goal of the collection is to paint a shared story of how we are shaped by these exchanges of care in our lives, often and forever. Our hope is that a collected narrative of writings (from kind contributors like yourself) will help bring voice to these experiences that so often feel meaningful beyond words.

In addition to entry for the printed collection, there is an option to read your work aloud if you are NYC based (or have your work read aloud on your behalf if you are not) during an event in late April in Prospect Park.

PAST SHOWS & EVENTS

Grenadine

Brooklyn, NY

The makers in this show share an infatuation with the memories, stories, and emotions that our household things, routines, and everyday environments hold. These objects are made with an adoration beyond love — deep red, thick like syrup. Up for one day only and on display in a beautifully preserved Brooklyn brownstone in Crown Heights, we welcomed guests into a space that indulged in stories of ‘home.’

Poorly

London, UK

This exhibition invited visitors to explore experiences and perspectives on health, illness, and disability of 35 artists. As we try to describe pain “language at once runs dry”, leaving us feeling foolish, perhaps alone or feeling misunderstood - disbelieved even. Drawing from the British slang term ‘poorly’, and inspired by Virginia Wolf’s essay On Being Ill, we hope to broaden the way we think and speak about our experiences of ‘poorliness.’ Each work has a voice, all contributing to a language we make, and continue to make for a more inclusive world, as those that are poorly.

Made to Share

London, UK

During the 2024 London Design Festival, Made to Share took over the green in Mansion Square. With custom-built skill haring structures, the public green-space was turned it into a playful workshop space. Our host of artists and designers invited passers-by to slow down, observe small moments around us, and get creative.

LAST MINUTE.

London, UK

The emerging artists displayed in this group exhibition gallery were gathered by the willingness to participate in something Last Minute. There is a silliness, nervousness, and excitement in things happening unplanned. As much as we try to curate conclusions, life reminds us that beginnings are found in spontaneity and happenstance. Our “Happy Accidents’ Last Minute workshop was held with visitors to practice the willingness to look for connections.
